CIRCUS OF CHAOS
âWhat did you write about?â I asked Fox the next day. I hadnât written my second assignment yet, and I only had one day left.
She looked uncomfortable. âTalking in front of a bunch of people,â she said, a little sheepishly.
I nodded slowly. I knew she didnât like that. When it came to doing some things, she was fearless: sheâd catch a snake or walk through a dark culvert. But she wasnât so good with people.
âYou did fine when we read our story,â I said.
âThatâs because we were wearing war paint,â she said. âIt wasnât really me. I was hiding behind the war paint.â
That made sense. I had felt the same way. The lipstick war paint had changed us into the wild girls, and the wild girls werenât afraid of anything.
âWhat are you writing about?â she asked me.
âI donât know. I canât come up with anything. I tried writing about talking with my dadâthat was scary. But it didnât seem like the right kind of scary.â
âI felt kind of stupid writing about being scared of talking in front of a crowd,â Fox said. âBut it was something that really scared me. What really scares you?â
I recognized that question. It was one of the questions Verla had written on the board. âIf I could figure that out, I could write something,â I said, a little annoyed.
âIf you donât know the answer, make something up,â she said. That was something else Verla said.
âOkay, thenâspiders.â I did think spiders were creepy.
âWhy?â
âBecause they have too many legs.â
âWhat else scares you?â
âMonsters.â
âWhat kind of monsters?â
âThe kind with lots of sharp teeth. They used to hide in my closet when I was a little kid.â
She nodded as if she knew those monsters. âWhat else scares you?â She acted like she was going to keep on asking the same question forever.
âListening to my mom and dad fight,â I said.
âYeah? Why does that scare you?â
I bit my lip, feeling like I had said more than I should. Listening to my parents argue made my stomach hurt, made me hide in my room. It really did scare me. I didnât know why, exactly. But I could make something up. âBecause my father turns into one of those monsters that hide in the closet,â I said. âThe kind with big teeth.â
Fox sat up straight in the easy chair, suddenly grinning. âNow thatâs scary,â she said.
I nodded slowly. âI remember hearing my mom tell him, âYou donât have to bite my head off.ââ
âA monster with sharp teeth and a really big mouth,â Fox said.
